A Play with Music
By Stephen Temperley
She gave sold-out concerts for the social elite of New York City, became the talk of the town, earned a cult following, and was a legend in her own mind. She had wealth, social standing, and a burning desire to sing. Unfortunately, she had no talent. The life of Florence Foster Jenkins is told through the eyes of her accompanist, Cosmé McMoon, who teamed up with her in 1932. Over the next dozen years, their strange partnership caused him to revise his first impression of her and of the very meaning of music itself. As Florence once observed, “People may say I can’t sing, but no one can ever say I didn’t sing!”
